Tragedy struck a family hailing from Dandeli when four of its members, who were traveling in a car for the marriage of their family member, died in a major road accident on the NH-17 at Cuncolim near Uskini bandh early Saturday morning.

Kasim Syed (59), daughter Shabnam Beig (29) and her six-month-old daughter Arya Beig and the car driver, Sadam Kailaga (21), also a native of Dandeli, died in the accident. Rizwan Syed (25), who had landed at the Dabolim airport in the wee hours of the day, also sustained injuries and is convalescing at the Hospicio hospital.

Sources said that injured Rizwan’s father Kasim Syed (who was amongst the occupants who died in the accident) had come to Vasco a day ago to collect Rizwan, who was scheduled to land at the Dabolim airport from the Gulf by the early morning flight. Kasim along with Shabnam and infant Arya left Vasco early morning to pick Rizwan at the Dabolim airport before they all headed to Dandeli by car for the wedding of Rizwan’s brother when an incoming goods trucks rammed against their car at Cuncolim.

The mangled remains of the car and that of the truck landed on the road side is a testimony of the impact of

the accident.

Sources said that deceased Shabnam is a cousin sister of injured Rizwan and is married at Vasco. She along with her six-month-old daughter were the occupants of the ill-fated car as they were heading to Dandeli to attend the wedding of Rizwan’s brother when the accident occurred.

The Cuncolim police have arrested truck driver, Manjuath Ulgadi, a native of Dharwad under section 279, 337 and 304-A of the IPC for causing rash and negligent driving resulting in the death of the four persons. The Cuncolim police are investigating.
