The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Friday inspected 13 restaurants and cashew outlets in Anjuna, Arpora and Calangute, directing four establishments to suspend operations for violating food safety norms. The action was part of the FDA’s ongoing surveillance drive to ensure food safety and hygiene standards in eateries and other food establishments.
Of the four establishments, one cashew outlet was found selling misbranded cashew nuts without dates and other mandatory labelling information. Three restaurants were directed to suspend operations for failing to maintain hygiene standards.
The FDA team also penalised three vendors Rs 10,000 each for violations under Section 69 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
In a separate action to safeguard public health, the team destroyed 30 kg of heavily coloured tandoori items and chicken lollipops, 20 kg of biryani and 10 kg of pastries.
The inspection team comprised Designated Officer (North) Richard Noronha, Food Safety Officers Amit Mandrekar and Darlan Diukar, and staff member Sandeep Shelke. The drive was conducted under the guidance of FDA Director Shweta Dessai.
