The long-delayed restoration of the historic Chapora Fort is finally set to move forward, with Minister for Archaeology Subhash Phal Dessai informing the Goa Legislative Assembly on Monday that the work order will be issued within a month.

Responding during Question Hour, Phal Dessai admitted that the project had faced repeated delays due to high tender quotations.

Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo, who raised the issue, expressed frustration over the continued delays despite repeated follow-ups.

“Meanwhile, tourists continue to visit the fort and basic amenities like toilets are still missing,” she said.

Phal Dessai assured that toilet facilities would be constructed at the site, considering its touristic value. He added that Rs 5.77 crore had already been spent to build a pathway to the fort.

The minister also flagged the issue of encroachments near the site.

“At one point, I had to remove 200 illegal structures. We must maintain discipline at heritage sites and ensure they are monetised properly,” he said.

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, who intervened in the discussion, recalled that the restoration plan was initiated during his tenure as minister but had failed to see completion.

Taking a dig at Siolim MLA, he remarked, “I feel pity for Delilah. She left the Congress and joined the BJP for development, yet she still can’t get the work done.”

Sardesai also criticised the Chief Minister’s silence, saying Goa’s heritage needs “action, not excuses.”

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant finally stepped in to assure the House that the restoration order would be issued immediately after the Assembly session concludes.

The Chapora Fort, a popular tourist attraction in North Goa has been in need of repair and improved facilities for several years.
