Margao Municipal Council’s decision to close the Aquem ring road between dusk to dawn last night evoked mixed results, with unscrupulous elements dumping waste on the ring road past midnight.

The MMC cleared the fresh wet waste dumped along he ring road on Wednesday morning and has got the garbage dark spot illuminated with makeshift lighting. A JCB machine was deployed at the site to clear the fresh waste. MMC workers were monitoring the situation late Wednesday evening in a bid to keep the unscrupulous elements at bay.

The decision to close the road for traffic every day from 7 pm to 7 am, however, seemed to have not gone down well with the road users.

Wednesday saw the ring road users entering into arguments with the Margao Municipal workers manning the barricades erected to close the road from dusk to dawn.

“We are helpless in enforcing the closure of the road in the absence of police and private security”, informed a worker.

The order for road closure issued by the South Goa district Collector, Jyoti Kumar has cast responsibility on the Margao Municipal Council to make the necessary arrangements for deployment of security since the traffic police has expressed its inability to deploy force at the ring road for want of manpower.

Given the situation, the Margao Municipal workers are keeping their crossed how to stop the miscreants from dumping waste at the ring road.

“We have cleared the waste from the ring road today morning with the help of labour and machinery. We only hope that the miscreants do not dispose their waste at the site tonight’, informed a senior MMC official.

The official further hoped the civic authorities will deploy private security at the ring road to man the barricades and put a full stop to the garbage dumping.
