The first day of the eight-day Serendipity Art Festival (SAF) that begins on December 15, is set to see over 16 events being held in seven different venues in the capital city and Ribandar.
While the events will be held all day long, the formal inauguration of the festival will be held at 7:30 pm at the Dayanand Bandodkar ground. The festival is absolutely free to the public, but make sure to check seat capacity for the events on the SAF website beforehand.
Of the events set to take place during the day, the Children’s Art Park will be host to the event “Music in the park” from 12 to 3 pm. There will be concerts in the park by a variety of musicians and bands. Genres range from jazz to fusion, pop to retro and blues to funk. Today, the performance will be by “Still Waters.” Still Waters is a Jazz, Funk, Latin Band led by ace drummer Lester Godhino, vocalist Daniella Rodrigues, with Jason Quadros on keyboard, and drummer Merwyn Mascarenhas.
At the same venue, between 1 and 4 pm will be “Shelter” -- a monumental participatory installation created by assembling cardboard modules of identical shape and size, by interlocking, without using tape or glue. Shelter is an interactive proposal for an audience that is in transit.
“The Landscape of Human Emotions”, at the Old GMC building, is a performance that will take place from 4 to 5 pm. In Indian classical dance -- literature, music and dance are woven together into a beautiful tapestry of emotions.
The play Hayavadana by Girish Karnar will be performed between 6 pm and 8 pm at the Parade Ground. The central idea behind the two-hour play is the question -- what does one love in someone? Do we love their mind, or their heart? Here, the heart is representative of the body and the tangible, while the head represents the intangible”wisdom, poetry.
Following the play will be a performance of the Dhun Mela for two hours -- Folk songs sung in different languages across India that reflect the cultural diversity that has always existed in the country. These songs relate to various aspects of human existence, responding to the joys and
challenges of everyday life.
There will be two performances of Anton Chekov’s “Sounding Vanya” at the Old GMC, one between 12 and 2:30 and the second between 6 and 8:30 pm.
The Old PWD Complex will be host to a dance performance of “Once Upon a Time” Curated by Mayuri Upadhyay between 2 and 6 pm. This performance can accommodate a limited audience of upto 15 viewers. Audience will be admitted on a first-come first-serve basis.
Bass Holograms, Sound Intervention will be hosted at the Adil Shah Palace between 6:45 and 7:45 pm. This event will explore the bare bones of bass frequencies, the torpor of oscillations, a relationship to silence unfolds within Bass Holograms and takes the audience to the very edge of sound, inside time, into the swirls of an ‘electronic raga’.
