A member of the Shiroda Panchayat has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 50-year-old man in Shiroda on Thursday night.
According to police reports, Rajendra Naik had sustained serious injuries following a dispute over a sluice gate and later died in Goa Medical College hospital.
The accused, Suhas Naik, had been operating the sluice gate since the last five years, but this year, Rajendra Naik had been given the chance to operate the sluice gate after he had made the highest bid.
A quarrel later broke out between Rajendra Naik and Suhas Naik on Thursday midnight and Rajendra Naik was struck on the head with an unidentified object.
He was found grievously injured around 500 meters
from his house. He was shifted in a 108 ambulance to the Hospicio at Margao and later to the GMC hospital, where he passed away.
Ponda police later arrested Suhas Naik in this connection and suspect the involvement of others in the crime. Investigations are underway to trace the accomplices of the accused and the weapon used in the crime.
The accused has been remanded to 10 days in police custody and Police Inspector Mohan Gawade is investigating the case.
