In yet another sea fury, entire Galgibaga beach coast lies severely battered, threatening the very existence of beach sands.
Rampaging waves pounded the Galgibaga beach coast, causing extensive sand erosion, washing away almost the entire beach sands into the sea.
Residents watched helplessly on Sunday as the turbulence in sea started uprooting a number of Casuarina trees, leaving a trail of destruction on the shore.
According to sources, the sea has been rough since last three days and nearly every day many Casuarina trees are disappearing into the sea. The worst sea sand erosion was seen on Sunday, as huge and tumultuous waves began to pound the interior land and uprooting Casuarina believed to be the protectors of interior land.
Galgibaga beach, having one of the two turtle rehabilitation sites in Canacona taluka, has already suffered a massive damage during the recent Tauktae cyclone, even to the extent of Galgibaga River changing its course to enter the Sea from its usual course through Maxem creek. From one route, now Galgibaga, Maxem river enters the sea three routes, with the Galgibaga River during Tauktae cyclone teared through the vast sand Island at two more places to make way to the sea.
The lifeguard tower, time and again protected with erection of sand bags at its base.
A fishermen's Gumti, where the fishermen community also station their Canoes, and used to conduct their traditional religious rituals has also been washed away. According to sources, the fishermen community annual traditional puja is scheduled on Monday, may be conducting the sea puja out in open.
The coast erosion is severe from the middle of the beach towards the Southern end.
A few villagers who witnessed the rampaging sea, informed the way rough sea is causing destruction on beach front since the coast was battered by Tauktae cyclone, the Galgibaga beach is soon going to vanish.
The last three days alone witnessed disappearance several Casuarina trees, which used to protect the coastline against sand erosion.
