Is the ring road running parallel to the railway tracks at Aquem a Sonsodo in the making, with the High Court barring open dumping of waste at the dump yard?
Margao Municipal Officials say the half-a-kilometer stretch of the ring road, starting from the parking lot outside the Aquem side of the Margao railway station right up to the Power House, has now become a black spot, with waste finding its way on the road from both within the city limits and outside.
The ring road playing host to outside garbage is no news at all, with the road side coming in handy for unscrupulous traders and contractors to dispose of the waste. What’s new is the fact that the quantum of waste dumped along the stretch has only increased over the last one month, but for a different reason.
MMC officials informed that before the High Court order barring open dumping of waste at Sonsodo came into effect, MMC workers used to just collect the mixed waste from the ring road and dispose off the same at Sonsodo.
Now, with open dumping coming to a halt at Sonsodo and Fomento no longer accepting mixed waste at the treatment plant, the MMC has been hard pressed to segregate the mixed waste lying along the ring road.
And, with MMC facing manpower constraints, civic officials say the mixed waste has been lying along the ring road for want of segregation.
Interestingly, plans mooted by the MMC to get the Margao police to patrol the stretch of the ring road and also install CCTV cameras to keep unscrupulous elements at bay has come a cropper.
A ride down the Aquem side of the Margao railway station to the Power House reveals the worst scenario with mixed waste occupying the entire stretch of the ring road right up to Rawanfond.
That MMC workers have not descended along the stretch is evident by the fact that the waste has been lying unattended for days together.
