The Chandor gram sabha on Sunday discussed the issue of garbage management and the budget proposals for the 2023-24 financial year.
At the gram sabha meeting chaired by Sarpanch Estefan Dias, the panchayat proposed to effect a hike in garbage tax levied on households. Members, however, expressed their reservations over the proposal, with members pointing out that hike is too steep and should not be a burden to the households.
The members further demanded to know the fate of the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) project mooted by the panchayat.
After much discussions, it was decided not to implement the hike in the garbage collection fees for the moment, with members suggesting to the panchayat body to first undertake a survey of the households.
Village Development Committee (VDC) Convenor Julio D’Silva said the survey of the households was suggested since it was found that there could be houses, which is paying garbage tax for the one unit, but in reality, the premises is leased for a number of tenants.
The Sarpanch informed that the panchayat is on the look out for suitable land to set up the MRF facility.
