A day after violent clashes had left around 40 persons, including 15 police personnel, injured during the traditional Kalotsav celebration of Bhumika Temple in Poriem-Sattari, the traditional Gaulan Kala festival was celebrated at Poriem temple on Thursday noon amid a strong police force.
Strong police security under the supervision of DySP Jivba Dalvi and Vishwesh Karpe was deployed to ensure law and order as devotees visited the temple to take part in religious services.
Incidentally, members of the Rane-Gaonkar Mahajan groups did not participate in the Gaulan Kala festival on Thursday.
When contacted in this regard, a representative of the group said: “What was the point of participating in such a festival in a place where there is no respect to our community? Many devotees had to be treated in hospital.”
“It is clear from Wednesday's incident that the government machinery is against us. A case will definitely be filed in the court in the coming days.”
“It is also unfortunate that statements are being made that the dispute has been resolved. Fact is, there is still a possibility of tension in the area,” the member added.
Meanwhile, Bicholim DySP Jivba Dalvi on Thursday stated that the situation was under control at the Bhumika Temple in Poriem.
“There is no tension at the moment. The Gaulan Kala festival was celebrated by a large number of devotees with traditional fervour and in a peaceful manner on Thursday,’ said DySP Dalvi.
Police have registered offences against 38 persons so far and more persons are likely to be booked in the incident. Valpoi police have also written to Sattari Deputy Collector to initiate action against 12 persons who have violated bond conditions by indulging in violence on Wednesday.
