Contrary to his own statements before the High Court of Bombay at Goa earlier this week, Dean of GMC Dr S M Bandekar steadfastly refused to admit that shortage of oxygen during the “dark hours” of 2 to 6 am caused almost 70 deaths at GMC over the last four days.
“There is high oxygen consumption in double mutant Covid infection. So, we cannot directly say that drop in oxygen has caused a certain number of deaths because all of them were critical cases. How to prove that interruption has caused deaths? One cannot say absolutely that deaths were caused during the dip in oxygen supply. Sudden spike in cases was like a tsunami. We could not refuse a case,” he said.
Dr Bandekar further stated that eight of the 33 Covid deaths that occurred at GMC between Friday and Saturday were recorded between 2 and 6 am. However, he insisted that it would be incorrect to draw a correlation between these deaths and drop in oxygen pressure and supply at GMC.
