GMEA threatens strike if MMC office memo not withdrawn

Taking strong exception to the inter-office memo imbroglio in Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), the Goa Municipal Employees Association on Wednesday served a strike notice to the chief officer urging him to either withdraw the memorandum or face strike from August 22.

"In case the memorandum is not withdrawn forthwith, we shall be striking work from August 22. The chief officer and the council will solely be held responsible for any inconvenience caused to the public due to the strike," said Keshav Prabhu, president of Goa Municipal Employees Association.
GMEA president said the chief officer has issued the memo to entire staff without any evidence and appears to have been done with malafide intention.
"We feel the memo has been issued to harass the permanent staff of the council who have been working diligently and with utmost care," he said in his strike notice.
It may recalled that on Tuesday, the administrative staff of the civic body went on flash strike after an inter-office memo issued by CO, Clen Madeira, warned the staff for leaking info to media and RTI activists. Although the issue was resolved after the staff met the MMC chairperson, on Wednesday morning Keshav Prabhu visited the MMC office and had discussion with permanent employees of the council.
What has irked most of the civic administrative staff was the attitude and functioning of two law officers recruited by the council on contract basis.
"I have received verbal complaints from almost all the staff that the so-called legal temporary staff is harassing the permanent employees by calling them names and back answering them which are defamatory and not expected from a person of
legal background. If this continues, we shall be forced to agitate," Prabhu said.

"Harassed" staff never approached me: CO

MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council, Chief Officer, Clen Madeira said no decision has been taken on the strike notice yet but expressed surprise that the council's administrative staff were harassed by some other staff, which was never brought to his attention.
"So far I have received no complaints verbal or written from any of my staff either about harassment or calling of names," Madeira told The Goan.
He said in normal circumstances the right decision for the aggrieved staff would have been to approach him, which never happened.
