Goa Chambers of Commerce and Industries (GCCI) Logistics Committee Chairman Chandrakant Gawas on Tuesday morning said a huge show of strength by the Goa Mining People’s Front (GMPF) in New Delhi could be a game
changer.
Speaking to the media, Gawas said resumption of mining in the State was essential as there were many people who had been dependent on mining activities.
“The GMPF will have an agitation and a meeting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to demand mining activity in the State. All mining dependents must participate and show their strength and it is extremely important to be united at such times.”
“This show of strength will then show the central government how important it is for them to start mining activities in Goa. Mining activities are essential for Goa and its economy and a lot of people are dependent on mining,” said Gawas.
Claiming that if the people and government in Maharashtra could be united to endorse the Maratha reservation bill, such unity should also be present in Goa, Gawas said.
“The Maratha Reservation (Maratha Arakshan) in Maharashtra was presented in the assembly and was passed on the same day after a show of strength by the people in Maharashtra. I appeal to everyone to remain united and put up a huge display of strength in Delhi. This could be a game changer,” said
Gawas.
Meanwhile, the Goa Barge owners Association (GBOA) Acting President Raymond De Sa said he was hopeful that the central government would take some steps
to resume mining activity
in Goa.
“The GBOA will request the central government to amend the MMDR Act 1987 as this is the only solution and the only option left to resume mining in Goa. We are hoping that the Centre will do so in the forthcoming Parliament session,” said De Sa.
