Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu on Monday cited the country’s population explosion to tell graduating students at the Goa University’s 32nd convocation ceremony to “go abroad if you want”.

Delivering his convocation address at the Kala Academy after congratulating students who graduated, Naidu expressed that he knew that some students might be thinking of going abroad, and encouraged them to do so.

“Some of you might be thinking of going abroad. Go. Earlier I used to discourage, but today there is no problem, we have enough population. If you want to go, go. The Vice-president, known for his rhyming wisecracks, also urged students to “continue learning even while earning.”

Meanwhile, Naidu also took the opportunity to joke about President Trump’s India visit. “We’re living in a global village. What is happening in Goa is known in Portugal and Washington in a few minutes. In fact, Washington is coming today,” he said to laughs from the packed audience.

In the BRICS ranking which places GU at 250, Naidu exhorted  students and the management to try and get the ranking up to the top  100.
