The capital city bore the brunt of power shutdown throughout Sunday with power playing truant and leaving residents fuming in the hot and humid weather.

Officials at the Electricity Department attributed the power disruption to the work taken up by the Department at the Kadamba plateau.

Several parts of the city and surrounding areas witnessed irregular power even as the situation has been continuing for the last two days. Officials disclosed that power was being allotted to different locations in Panaji at an interval of every 30 minutes on rotation and the situation would continue past midnight.

The Congress, meanwhile, called for the resignation of  Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar because of the continuous power failures.

“The new academic year starts tomorrow, but even on its eve, there is a power-cut,” Congress spokesperson Urfan Mulla said.

Citing difficulties faced by people because of electricity failures, Mulla questioned who would take responsibility for the losses borne by fish and vegetable vendors.
