Emphasizing on organ donation as the need of the hour, Cabinet Advisory Committee member and Urban Development Minister, Francisco D’Souza on Thursday said that Goa can be the number one state for organ donation.
“With over 90 percent literacy in the State, Goa can easily be the number one state in the county in organ donation,” D’Souza said.
The Urban Development Minister was speaking at a function to welcome ‘Organ donation awareness padyatris “ Mumbai to Madgaon’ in Mapusa on Thursday evening.
Speaking further, D’Souza said Goa did not have an organ donation bank but expected to have one in the new super speciality block that is coming up at Goa Medical College and Hospital campus.
Stressing on the need for awareness on organ donation, he said, there were donors and receivers of organs in Goa.
He further said that an organ donor does not see caste, class or religion of a person.
10 padyatris have traversed almost 826 kms on foot from Mumbai to Goa to create awareness on organ donation.
They arrived in Goa on Wednesday and will proceed towards Margao where the final function will be held on April 15.
Sunil Deshpande, one of the padyatris said that people have now realised the importance of organ donation.
To create awareness so that people voluntarily come forward for organ donation, he said, NGOs, government and public will have to come together.
“Goa can be an ideal state for organ donation because there is enough awareness in the state,” Deshpande said.
Another padyatri, Puroshottam Pawar, also spoke on the occasion.
The function was organized by Giants Welfare Foundation 10 and The Federation of Organ and Body Donation.
