Goa Dairy suspends launch of its butter

Facing stiff competition from SUMUL, the Goa State Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union (Goa Dairy) has suspended the launch of its butter to focus on retaining dairy farmers in its fold.

Ten months back, then chairman of Goa Dairy Vithoba Desai had announced plans to launch the Goa Dairy butter as part of its growing list of products.
After the the successful launch of its ice-cream, Goa Dairy had decided to target butter as its next product.
Desai had said that Goa Dairy was studying the market to introduce its butter, which could give competition to other companies in the market.
Goa has a big demand for table butter and Goa Dairy had plans to utilised its wide and extensive network to promote the product.
Speaking to The Goan, Goa Dairy Managing Director Dr Navasu Sawant confirmed that plans to launch the Goa Dairy butter have been kept on hold.
“At present, we are not planning the launch of the butter, instead we are spending our resources to increase milk production in the State by meeting farmers,” Sawant said.
Goa Dairy officials have been busy meeting dairy farmers in a bid to persuade them to stick with Goa Dairy, instead of supporting dairies from outside the State.
The entry of SUMUL in Goa has posed a huge challenge to Goa Dairy, with 10 of its farmers in Sattari taluka having joined the new milk producer. According to Desai, there is demand of about 3 lakh litres of milk in Goa. Goa Dairy caters to about 40 per cent of the demand and the rest is catered to by 14 brands, which are in the market. Presently, about 20,000 litres of milk is procured from neighbouring states, while 70,000 litres is procured from local farmers.
