Goa Forward Party on Wednesday alleged that the Private University Bill passed in the recently concluded Budget Assembly session reeked of a scam, and has requested the governor not to give his assent to the Bill.

Addressing a press conference in the city, Dilip Prabhudessai, Vice-President of the GFP, and General Secretary Mohandas Lolienkar said that if this Bill becomes an Act, people will come to Goa to carry out business in the name of education. “What’s the need to bring in a Bill? Good educational institutes that have to set up here will come anyway, like BITS Pilani, Goa campus,” Prabhudessai said.

Lolienkar said that the Government was only proving that it could not manage giving quality education in the State, so they have to rope in private universities. Meanwhile, he questioned the necessity to pass the Bill when Opposition MLAs were not in the House. (The Bill was passed just before the Chief Minister presented the budget in the House, and after the unruly opposition leaders were marshalled out.)

He questioned who would ensure that these universities give quality education?

“Anyone will come and set up a university here. UP/Bihar students will all flood here. No one will be able to control that,” he claimed.

He also asked who would regulate the fee structure. “The fees will be so high that common man in Goa will not be able to afford the fees,” he added.

The party has demanded another discussion on this Bill in the Assembly.
