With 20.99% of the State's population drinking alcohol, Goa has ranked fifth on a list of states and Union Territories in terms of consumption of alcohol. The fact emerged from a research conducted by Bangalore-based Trade Brains. The agency compiles data that is helpful to the investors in the country.
The other states and Union Territory that have ranked higher than Goa in the list include, Arunachal Pradesh at 38.47%, Sikkim at 28.05%, Telangana at 24.56% and Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 22.37%.
Gujarat, which adopted a prohibition policy in the 1960s, has the lowest alcohol consumption rate in the country at 3.24%. Other states and Union Territories with low alcohol consumption are Jammu and Kashmir at 4.61%, Rajasthan at 5.62%, Maharashtra at 7.26%, Uttar Pradesh at 7.38%, Bihar at 7.62%, Karnataka at 8.56%.
