Stating that Goa will be No 1 State in treating waste, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday told the Goa Legislative Assembly that the government would draw a five-year plan to treat garbage in the entire State and was expected to place it in the House by the next assembly session.
“The government is serious on the garbage issue. The new waste management ministry will conduct a survey in all 12 talukas on how to treat waste. The new ministry has started work to draw a plan for next five years. We may place the plan in the House in the next assembly session,” Sawant said.
The chief minister was responding to Marcaim MLA Sudhin Dhavlikar on construction of a treatment plant in Curti-Ponda.
Sawant said the government has already decided to set up four garbage treatment plants in the State.
“We will also take initiatives to treat bio-medical, hazardous, construction waste. In the next three years, Goa will be No 1 in treating waste,” he said.
Earlier, Marcaim MLA requested the government to consider setting up a 30-40 tonne waste treatment plant in Curti-Ponda which would take care of waste of surrounding four constituencies.
He said around 17,500 sq metre of land was available in Curti and a Saligao type of garbage plant with a lesser capacity could be set up there.
Urban Development Minister Milind Naik said the government had no such plan of setting up a plant in Ponda, but if the MLA puts up a proposal then the government could consider looking into the matter.
Naik informed that Ponda municipal area generated around 400 tonnes of wet and dry waste.
He said Ponda Municipal Council has been collecting 100% day-to-day segregated garbage from all the 15 wards of PMC.
“The wet waste is treated by windrows composting and the dry waste is baled and transported to a cement company in Karnataka through the Goa Waste Management Corporation,” Naik said.
Contesting Dhavlikar’s suggestion, Ponda MLA Ravi Naik said the 18,000 sq mt of land available with PMC was not suitable to construct a plant to treat garbage of four constituencies.
“The area is close to the road and is surrounded by hills. I think it’s not suitable to construct a plant there,” he said.
Stating that PMC was doing a good job in treating the municipal waste for the moment, the CM suggested that both Ponda and Marcaim MLAs should identify land to set up a waste plant in the area for the future.
