Goa unemployment figures higher than Nat average: Report

PANAJI

Goa’s unemployment trend continues to worry netizens as an independent research firm has recorded the joblessness rate at 13.6 percent for November month, significantly higher than the national average of 8.1 per cent.

Goa ranks in the top 10 States where employment has been a major problem, as per the data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) published on December 4, 2022.

The monthly report also indicates that Goa’s unemployment rate has been in two digits all through this year except in June when it dipped to 5.5 percent. No data was made available for October 2022. Similarly, in the corresponding month last year, Goa’s unemployment rate was recorded at 12.7 percent, about one percent lower than in November 2022.

The data has raised questions on Goa government’s massive job fair that was incidentally held in the very same month wherein over 14,000 job aspirants applied for over 5,500 vacancies across private and corporate sectors.

Goa Forward Party (GFP) President Vijai Sardesai was the first to take to social media to criticize the State government over Goa’s poor employment status, on Monday. “Goa’s unemployment rate stands at 13 per cent even after holding Mega Job Fair while India’s rate stands at 8.1 per cent for November 2022. Mega PR events are no substitute for committed policy-making, which this @BJP4Goa Govt does not want to do. @DrPramodPSawant Govt exposed !” he tweeted.
