GOACAN has welcomed the DoPs decision to schedule all pending gram sabha meetings in different villages across the State this month.
"The schedule issued by the respective BDOs to hold the gram sabha meetings on the three Sundays of November is an important step in the right direction,” said GOACAN Convenor Roland Martins.
“The non-functional gram sabha had slowed down implementation of the Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP).”
“Such a situation across the various talukas is a wake up call for the DoP to put in place a monitoring system for gram sabha meetings, so that this is not repeated in future,” he added.
The GOACAN has been involved in a six-month awareness drive "Gramsabha Zagrut Za", as part of its 'Making Democracy Work' campaign.
As part of this awareness drive, GOACAN encourages citizens to attend and participate in the gram sabha meetings and prepare proposals on many important issues affecting the community.
GOACAN has also encouraged citizens to check the functioning of committees at the Panchayat level such as the Village Water & Sanitation Committee (VWSC), Road Safety & Traffic Management Committee (RSTMC), Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC), Village Child Committee (VCC) and the Village Health, Sanitation & Nutrition Committee (VHSNC).
