Pope Francis on Tuesday appointed Fr Barthol Barretto, a priest of Goan origin, and Fr Allwyn D’Silva as Auxiliary Bishops of Bombay Diocese.
While Fr Barretto “ who hails from Loutolim “ has been Parish Priest of Immaculate Conception Church, Borivli and Vicar Forene, states a CBCI press note, Fr D’Silva until now has been Episcopal Vicar and Secretary of the Climate Change Desk of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC).
Fr Barretto was born in Mahim-Mumbai on September 16, 1961. He did his Seminary studies at St Pius X College, Archdiocese of Bombay, and later obtained a Bachelor of Arts. He has ordained priest on April 8, 1989 for the Archdiocese of Bombay.
He served the Archdiocese in various assignments, including Dean of Thane Deanery, Secretary to the Archbishop and Spiritual Director and Administrator at St Pius X College, Goregaon.
Fr D’Silva was born in Mumbai on April 20, 1948. After his schooling, he entered the Seminary in St Pius X College, Archdiocese of Bombay, where he did his philosophy and theology. He obtained an MA in Political and Economic Sciences from the University of Mumbai in 1978. He was ordained priest on April 19, 1975 for the Archdiocese of Bombay.
While serving in various parishes in Mumbai diocese, Fr D'Silva has also been member of the Pastoral Council, Priests Council, Commission for Justice and Peace, Co-President of Centre for Peace Trust, Director of the Archdiocesan Office for Environment and Director of Prison Ministry India, Mumbai. He has taught for over 35 years at St Pius X College, Mumbai.
