Goan pork sausages ‘Choris’ may be next in line for GI tag

A move to obtain Geographical Indication (GI) tags for the famed Goan pork sausages (Choris) initiated by the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) is taking shape and discussions in this regard were held with a group of sausage makers at the chamber’s headquarters in the capital recently.

The meeting was guided by Orlando Rodrigues, who heads the GCCI’s Agriculture Committee and was attended by Dr Sangam Kurade, Joseph D’Souza, Deepak Parab, the chamber’s director general Sanjay Amonkar and Deputy Director Ambika Dhakhenkar, besides several members of the sausage-making industry from Agacaim.

Parab briefed the attendees at the meeting on the process to apply as well as the benefits of a GI tag for the product.

Parab said forming an association of traditional sausage makers to address issues and collectively represent their interests would be a prelude to the initiative to gain the GI tag.
