Goan student Jaeden in Sumy reaches Ukraine-Poland border

PANAJI
The lone Goan student who was stranded in Sumy amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict has been safely evacuated from Sumy and arrived at Ukraine’s border with Poland late Wednesday evening.

Jaeden Gomes Pereira (19) of Benaulim had been stranded along with hundreds of students in Sumy-Ukraine and had been seeking shelter in a bunker for nearly two weeks.

The stranded students were moved out in special buses as part of a special convoy with Indian officials accompanying them. They reached Poltava by bus and from there, they were sent in a train to Lviv.

On reaching Lviv, Jaeden and about 600 other students were then put on a special train mobilised by Indian Embassy officials.

The Indian Ambassador to Ukraine later flagged off the special train with 600 Indian students at the Lviv Railway Station, where they proceeded towards Poland.

The train was expected to stop at the Ukraine border for formalities, before they would be allowed to proceed to Poland, where Indian Embassy officials are in contact with the Polish Border Guards.

Jaeden and the other students are likely to arrive in Poland in the wee hours of Thursday.

After formalities, Jaeden and the other students are expected to board evacuation flights to India on Thursday.

A state table tennis player who has represented Goa, Jaeden was a second-year veterinary science student who along with some students from Kerala and Tamil Nadu had been pursuing education at the Sumy National Agrarian University in Sumy-Ukraine, before the war broke out between Russia and Ukraine.

Amid the heavy fighting between Russia and Ukraine in Sumy, Jaeden and the other students had been forced to seek shelter in a bunker near the university, with limited provisions for food and water.
