Goencho Avaz an NGO which was raising issue related to unplanned development in the state has joined hands with villagers of Pernem who are opposing the government’s move to shift two temples to build a four lane national highway.

“The authorities need to slowdown with the mindless and heartless development,” said Swapnesh Sherlekar co-convenor of Goencho Awaz in a press conference addressed in Panaji along with Pernem villagers.

Goencho Avaz has urged the government not to demolish Mauli and Vetal temples located at Porascadem village of Pernem Taluka. The NGO echoed the claim of villagers that these are century-old heritage monuments.

The NGO urged the government to thoroughly understand the traditions and heritage of any place before planning any projects. “Mauli temple is constructed around an ant hill (Roinn) which is an abode for the snakes and cannot be relocated,” said a local Jitendra Gaonkar.

We have given the option to change the alignment of the road to settle the issue. If the government doesn’t respond, we will be forced to agitate, said Gaonkar.

Presently due to opposition the government has halted the work of the national highway at Pernem. The villagers also alleged that the land consisting the temple was never acquired by the Government.
