The Goencho Ekvott (GE) on Tuesday stopped the work carried out by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) contractors in property not owned by South Western Railways (SWR) at Cansaulim.
In a press release, GE founder member Orville Dourado accused the RVNL of carrying out works without approval of local panchayat or intimation to the property owners.
He added that the workmen themselves removed their construction material upon being told that such illegal activity will not be tolerated by the villagers.
"As per the Supreme Court recent verdict, it is imperative that the SWR cease all construction activities on the Double Tracking, since it has found that it is commercially unviable as less than 15 trains, most of which are for the transportation of coal, ply on the current single tracks.”
“Moreover, the highest court in the land has recommended to use the Krishnapatnam Port on the East Coast of India which also is owned by Adani Group where the railway infrastructure is already ready and under-utilised.”
“Goencho Ekvott condemns the highhandedness of RVNL, which has been trespassing private properties along the existing single tracks from Issorcim to Arossim and has resorted to felling fruit bearing coconut palms and other trees under the cover of darkness," said Dourado.
