The man who induced many a gullible Goan investor to invest in Basmati rice with the promise of sharing profits is now cooling his heels in the Margao police lock-up.

While accused Azim Khan, a resident of Gogol-Margao, has been arrested by the Margao police on a complaint filed by Gulsher Ahmed and two others for cheating them to the tune of Rs 2.20 crore, Margao Sub-divisional Police Officer, DySP Serafino Dias, told the media on Friday that the cheated amount stands at a whopping Rs 7-8 crore with more and more investors complaining of being duped.

Investigating Officer, PSI Laureen Sequeira, said the accused has been arrested under section 420 and 406 of the IPC.

In the complaint, Gulsher, a resident of Colmorod, stated that the accused induced him and others to part with their money on various dates in different installments on the pretext of investing the amount in Basmati rice business. The accused had offered to share the profit on 50-50 per cent basis, but failed to give the same and also the invested amount, thereby cheating Gulsher and others to the tune of Rs 2.20 crore.

DySP Serafino Dias told the media that around 15 other investors had called him on Friday to complain that the accused had cheated them too on the promise of sharing profits in the rice business. “Given the number of complainants coming out to lodge their plaints, the amount which was accepted by

the accused may touch a whopping Rs 7-8 crore,” DySP Serafino said.
