In an announcement issued by the state government, Governor Mridula Sinha who is also the Chancellor of Goa University has constituted a Search Committee to recommend a panel of names for selection of a new Vice- Chancellor for Goa University.
Those listed in the committee include Dr Raghunath A Mashelkar, as Chairman, and Prof Balvant Jani “Tirth” and Shri Ashank Desai as Members who has been given 3 months time to submit its recommendations.
Current VC Shetye was expected to retire last year, while Parsekar wanted him to contiune for five years. Varsity executive council decided to make a rule that would allow for the VC to continue till the age of 70, but Sinha had declined to approve their decision.
In a last minute intervention, the state government passed an ordinance through a cabinet note extending Shetye’s term by one year.
