Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured the Goa Legislative Assembly on Thursday that the government is committed to tackling rash driving and road rage, which have become pressing concerns for public safety on roads.
Sawant informed the House that the Public Works Department (PWD) has been directed to rectify faulty road infrastructure within two months, acting on recommendations of a state‘level task force on accident reduction mandated by the Supreme Court of India. He further said enforcement agencies would intensify surveillance and penal action against violators.
The assurance came in response to a debate on the private member’s resolution moved by Cortalim MLA Anton Vas, who sought quicker responsiveness from enforcement agencies to curb reckless driving and violent incidents on the roads.
Vas had stressed that rash driving has emerged as a major threat to law and order and human lives, urging the government to strengthen enforcement mechanisms through increased traffic surveillance, patrolling, installation of speed detection systems, CCTV cameras, and use of breath analyzers in accident‘prone and high‘traffic areas.
His resolution also called for strict penal action against habitual offenders, including suspension or cancellation of driving licences.
Several legislators supported Vas, expressing concern over lax enforcement and rising accidents that have made Goa’s roads unsafe. They emphasized the need for stronger deterrents and better infrastructure to restore public confidence in road safety.
Following the Chief Minister’s assurances of prompt action, Vas agreed to withdraw his resolution.
