Govt firm on private medical college at South district hospital

Health minister says college will provide additional medical seats for Goan youth; Opposition will be taken along by allaying apprehensions

MARGAO
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Thursday said there’s no deviation in the plan to set up a private medical college at the South Goa District Hospital, asserting the private medical college will become a reality in the near future.

Saying the issue had come up for discussion in the last Assembly session, the Health Minister said he is ready to take the Opposition along to remove their misconceptions about the private medical college.

He said the private medical college will not only get investment, but will provide additional medical seats for the Goan youth, Rane further said the private medical college is mooted not just to run the college but to integrate the services so that the general public benefits from the project.

“I want to assure the people that the private medical college will be executed in a transparent manner. We will take the Opposition along by allaying their apprehensions about the medical college,” he said.

Saying that the government is facing a challenge of sorts to take the South Goa District Hospital to the next level, Rane admitted that he had handed out promise to the people of South Goa to introduce certain specialties such as a cardiology unit at the district hospital.

“I am aware of the promises I had made to the people. And, we will fulfill the promises in due course of time. In the meantime, we have concentrated our efforts to set up a super specialty hospital at the GMC complex. We have started IVS and gastroenterology will start at the GMC before December 19. Work is underway to set up a cancer hospital,” he said.

Saying that the first batch of 30 nurses have been sent for post-graduation study in Oncology, he said this is being done to ensure that people receive quality medical facilities in the proposed hospital.

Pointing out that the government is exploring the possibility of having a tie-up with Reliance Foundation to give further boost to the medical facilities, the Health Minister said the foundation has given the government huge scope and the same will be taken to its logical conclusion.

“Once I give a promise, I will ensure that it is achieved in due course of time,” he added.

Govt plans upgradation of Anganwadis through CSR

MARGAO: Minister for Women and Child Development Vishwajit Rane on Thursday said the government is working on a proposal to set up a foundation to channelise CSR for the upgradation of the Anganwadi schools in the State.

Admitting that the existing norms, including land issues and the cap on rent has prevented the government from taking up repairs and renovation of the Anganwadi schools, Rane said he has moved a file to the government with a proposal to set up a foundation through which CSR will be channelised to upgrade the schools.

“This is not today’s issue. Angandwadis have been craving for attention for long now. Certain norms have prevented us from taking up the repairs and renovation work in a big way. I know that students are studying inside temples for want of premises. I cannot allow such a thing to continue. In my constituency, I have drawn up plans to build the Anganwadi schools,” he said, adding that the government plans to set up a foundation to channelise CSR funds would provide an answer to the obstacles faced by the government in taking up the repairs and renovation work.
