Petrol which is currently available at a little above Rs 61 will now cost Rs 63.43 to the consumers. "In order to rationalise this to some extent without putting a substantial burden on the consumers, the government has decided to increase the VAT on petrol by 2%," government sources said. The difference between the prices of diesel and petrol in Karnataka is Rs 12, while in Maharashtra it is Rs 17. In Goa it was only Rs 4.70.
