Fr Basilio Andrade Higher Secondary School, Majorda, Government Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Borda, Fr Agnel Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Verna and Mount Mary's High School, Chinchinim entered the quarter-finals of Salcete Taluka Under 17 Subroto Mukherjee inter-school football tournament organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs at Government School play ground, Cuncolim on Monday.
Fr Basilio Andrade Higher Secondary School, Majorda beat Saviour of the World, Loutolim 4-3 via tie-breaker after both the teams were locked goalless draw at the end of regulation period. Both the teams displayed attacking brand of soccer, as a result there were few thrills at either end. Both had equal number of scoring chances but their forwards muffed gilt-edged scoring chances from close range.
The same trend continued after change of ends, with both the teams showing urgency and went all out but yielded no result. In the penalty shoot out, Henning Pereira, Melvin Mendes, Ivan Costa and Higin Cardozo were on target for Fr Basilo Andrade Higher Secondary while Ryan Fernandes, Brison Fernandes and Steve Gomes found the mark for Saviour of the World, Loutolim. In the second match, Government Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Borda blanked St Joseph High School, Aquem 2-0. Government Multipurpose Higher Secondary, Borda dominated the game right from the word go and never allowed their opponents to strike rhythm. Jovil Fernandes was the hero of the day as he struck twice to troop out worthy winners.
Gauncar Higher Secondary School, Raia made short work of Manovikas English Medium School, Margao 3-1 after leading 2-0 at half time. Gauncar Higher Secondary School virtually toyed with the rival's weak defence and troubled the rival defence with sporadic raids. The highlight of the day was a splendid brace by Romario Da Costa.
They started on whirlwind fashion and broke the deadlock when Romario slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. Spurred by the early success, Gauncar Higher Secondary School intensify the attacks and restricted their opponents to their own half. Romario doubled the lead before half time.
Gauncar Higher Secondary School continued to enjoy the lion's share of exchanges and doubled the lead when Romario struck twice. Crossing over, Gauncar continued to exert pressure and Clive Lucas put the issue beyond doubt soon after re start. Vrushal Kalekar scored the consolation goal for the losers.
In the third match, Fr Agnel Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Verna shunted out St Joseph Educational Institute, Chandor 2-0 via tie-breaker after both the teams were locked in a goalless draw.
In the ensuing penalty shoot out, Yohan D'Souza and Eldrich D'Cunha were on target for winners while none converted from Chandor School. In the last match of the day, Mount Mary's High School, Chinchinim scored a comprehensive 4-1 win over Infant Jesus High School, Colva. Benson Fernandes scored a brace while Aroon Carvalho and Jeromie Simoes were the goal-getters while Alroy D'Silva reduced the margin for the Colva school.
