Govt must acquire land from MPA for Ganesh pandal at Sada: MP

South Goa MP Capt Viriato Fernandes on Saturday said the government should intervene in the Murgaoncho Raja pandal issue at Sada and acquire land from the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), subsequently providing the site for devotees celebrating Sarvajanik Ganesh Chaturthi.

Addressing a news conference, Fernandes said the government was already promoting initiatives such as Mhaje Ghar and Mhaje Flat and argued that acquiring the land occupied by the Murgaoncho Raja pandal should not be an impossible task.

“The government can acquire the land from MPA and give relief to the devotees,” Fernandes said, stressing that the issue involved the sentiments of a large number of people celebrating the festival.

The demand came a day after the demolition squad reached the Murgaoncho Raja pandal at Headland-Sada amid heavy police security, following directions connected with the court proceedings.

'Law, order machinery

has failed’

Meanwhile, Capt Viriato Fernandes strongly criticised the State government over Friday evening’s firing incident outside a casino in Porvorim.

He said the incident was a serious indication of the deteriorating law and order situation in Goa, questioning how bullets could be fired openly.

Fernandes demanded that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant hand over the home portfolio to another person, alleging that the law and order machinery had failed.

“When bullets are being fired openly, the government must take responsibility,” Fernandes said, calling for immediate corrective measures to restore public confidence and ensure the safety of citizens.

He said the government could not afford to treat such incidents casually and demanded accountability for the deteriorating security situation in the State.
