Contending that nobody trusts the government in the state, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar on Sunday said the State government should listen to the people and hold public hearings on projects that are facing opposition.
“Congress party listens to people and do what the public wants. Even this government has to listen to the people. Take a public hearing and hear the people out,” Chodankar suggested.
“Nobody had elected this government. This government has no mandate to decide and destroy our Goa. People had elected Congress in 2017,” he added.
The GPCC chief was responding to a query that similar protests against Konkan Railway more than a decade back was quelled by the then Congress government and the KR became a reality.
Chodankar said after the protests erupted against the Konkan Railway project, the then Congress government at the Centre decided to appoint a public commission.
“The then central government appointed the Oza Commission who was asked to listen to the people’s problems and concerns and suggest a solution. Based on public feedback, the Oza Commission suggested several changes which were implemented in the KR project,” Chodankar said.
On the double-tracking project, he said the government should do two things “ prepare an environmental assessment report and evaluate how the project will benefit the public.
