Claiming that poor students could not afford to buy smart phones to pursue online classes, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the State government should not have stopped the cyberage scheme.

He was speaking at a programme organised by Porvorim Rising at Salai to felicitate students from Porvorim constituency who had excelled in SSC and HSSC exams of Goa Board.

“The Covid pandemic has not only changed the life style of people but has also brought a change in the education system. Now, online education has gained importance and this has increased the pressure on students, teachers and parents,” said Khaunte.

“The biggest hurdle has been the availability of smart phones. Poor students cannot afford to buy smart phones and some students have even ended their lives over the unavailability of smart phones. The State government should not have stopped the cyberage scheme.”

“Amid the Covid pandemic, the central government has introduced the New Education Policy 2020 and students will have to prepare themselves to face the challenges ahead,” said Khaunte.

The Porvorim MLA said Goa is one best 25 start-up destinations in the world.

“With educational institutions like BITS (Pilani), NIT (Ponda), GEC (Farmagudi) and PCCE (Verna), Goa has begun to produce high quality IT engineers that can power promising startups.”

“Learning is a continuous process and students should continue to upgrade their knowledge to climb the ladder of success,” said Khaunte.

He said students have been felicitated in recognition of their efforts to secure high marks at their exams.

“Students should not forget the pains and efforts taken by their parents and teachers to groom and prepare them for the exams,” said Khaunte.

Guest of honour Dr Pandurang Phaldessai said SSC and HSSC exams are important as they determine the future career of students.

“Parents should not impose their wishes on their children and should allow them to choose the career of their choice, be it engineering, medicine, teaching, dancing, music, etc., so that they gain expertise in that field,” said Dr Phaldessai.

Salvador do Mundo Sarpanch Sandeep Salgaonkar, Penha de Franca Sarpanch Swapnil Chodankar, ZP members Vaishally Satardekar and Gupesh Naik also spoke on this occasion.
