Govt tags 85 p’yats as economically weak

The State Government has notified a total of 85 out of the 190 odd panchayats in Goa to be economically weaker panchayats making them eligible for grants for the current financial year.

Of the total of 85 panchayats -- 57 lie in North Goa while 28 lie in South Goa.
Under clause 3 of the Goa (Grant of Financial Assistance of Economically Weaker Panchayats for Strengthening their Administration) Schemes, 2008, it is necessary to notify the list of Weaker panchayats eligible for grants from the Government.
In North Goa, five villages of Ilha de Tiswadi, 16 villages of Pernem, 12 villages of Bardez, eight of Sattari, five of Ponda and 11 of Bicholim have been notified.
In South Goa, seven in Canacona, three in Quepem, six in Sanguem, 10 in Salcete and one each in Mormugao and Dharbandora have been notified.
The panchayats have been identified after assessment of the income and expenditure of every panchayat in the manner provided in the scheme.

Govt likely to set up sheds for raising milch animals

With the idea of boosting self-employment, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services is in the process of developing two sheds, one each in North and South Goa, where units will be rented or leased for raising milch animals.

PANAJISpeaking on the sidelines of an event in Panaji, Minister Mauvin Godinho stated, "We have decided to procure or identify existing land in both North and South Goa, where we propose to build huge sheds where we will be giving units to youth from surrounding areas. They can function as if it is their own place. Nominal fees will be charged as rent. They will be earning Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh if they look after 20 animals."
