The State government has initiated a proposal for compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the family of Anita Fernandes who died in a tragic accident near the Police Station at Sanguem on January 6, after a tree came crashing down on the car in which she was taking driving classes.
At a meeting on Thursday in the office of the Sanguem deputy collector attended by Social Welfare Minister & Sangeum MLA Subhash Phaldessai, the Sanguem Deputy Collector A Asvin Chandru (IAS) informed that his office is in the process of forwarding the proposal to the South Goa Collector.
The compensation is proposed for payment under Disaster Management Act and is the maximum that can be paid to the deceased family, said Chandru, who has been personally following the matter since the mishap.
At the meeting, Phaldessai instructed the deputy collector to forward the file to the Collector on a priority basis so that the family members of the deceased do not suffer financially as her husband had been working abroad and will now be made to stay back in Goa to look after their minor children.
He also directed officials from the forest department, PWD and the police who were present for the meeting to coordinate with each other and conduct a survey of all trees in a dangerous condition by the side of the main road in Sanguem constituency.
A large number of huge trees lie dangerously on the main road in Rivona and Neturlim and during the monsoon, these trees come crashing down.
Phaldessai directed the officials from all three departments to prepare a report on the trees existing by the side of the main and also instructed forest department officials to verify the condition of the trees, keeping in mind the safety of human life.
Two days ago, the deputy collector has issued an order to the Sanguem Municipal Council to cut a huge mango tree which exists in the middle of the Sanguem Bus Stand.
