Govt to waive-off electricity charges for next 10 years to solar rooftop beneficiaries

PANAJI: In a bid to give major push to solar power generation, the State government had announced to waive-off all electricity charges for next 10 years to the consumers opting for solar rooftop.

Addressing the Legislative Assembly on the opening day of the two-day-long winter session, Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai said this is part of a broader initiative to promote solar energy in the state with a focus on residential rooftop installations.

Governor Pillai stated that under the newly launched Goem Vinamulya Vij Yevjan 2024, the government will provide free solar rooftop systems of up to 5 kW for homes that have consumed 400 units or less of electricity per month over the past year. This initiative is aimed at helping households achieve zero electricity bills while supporting Goa’s target of 100% renewable energy.

The Governor said the state aims to install 10 MW of residential rooftop solar panels by June 2025. Subsidies will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, in coordination with the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

So far, Rs 2.33 crore in subsidies have been distributed to 245 beneficiaries under the scheme.
