The Goa Cabinet which met on Wednesday, approved amendment to the Goa Daman and Diu Preservation of Trees Act 1964, which will redefine a ‘tree' to once again include the coconut palm as a tree.
The amended section while retaining the other definitions as amended last time round, to much uproar from the opposition now includes the words: "and includes the coconut palm."

commercial plantation as well as including a section providing for the declaration of a state tree.
The government has also decided to designate the coconut tree as the state tree, but there is no provision in the act to do so, in the new section.
The new section 7A reads as: "Declaration of as State tree - the government may, having regard to ecological, socio-economic, cultural or heritage value, declare a tree to be a state tree."
Other new clauses offers provisions for farmers to remove old or dangerous coconut trees by applying through an agriculture officer as provisions for commercial coconut plantations.
