Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott(GRE) on Sunday demanded that the Fisheries Department led by Fisheries Minister Vinod Palienkar to immediately seize all boats which are violating the fish ban period. The monsoon ban comes into effect from June 1 and lasts till
July 31.
GRE has also urged the government to replace the Director for Fisheries, claiming he has failed to discharge his duties in curbing the violation of fishing ban period in the State over the past two years. The organisation claimed that the director failed to act even after being confronted by several by their
delegations.
GRE claimed that catch of fish like Mackerel, Sardine, Pomfret, White Prawn and Kingfish has drastically reduced due to exploitation during the fishing ban period. They have urged the Palienkar to act immediately.GRE President Agnelo Rodrigues claimed that this is the first time since 1981 that the fishing ban has been violated by mechanised trawlers and it has gone unnoticed.
For this, Rodrigues demanded the resignation of the Director of
Fisheries.
Rodrigues also claimed that despite warnings, trawler owners continue to use LED lights and bull trawling for fishing.
