Rodrigues, who has announced his support for Sancoale ZP member Mariano Rodrigues, said this after his comments were sought whether GRE would support its Joint General Secretary and activist Olencio Simoes who was officially declared AAP candidate for Cortalim constituency.
Rodrigues said the organisation is apolitical and that they would not get involved in politics.
But when Rodrigues was reminded of GRE’s overwhelming support for late Matanhy Saldanha who was also the general secretary of the organisation, he said Matanhy was the founder member of the GRE and that is the reason GRE backed him.
But when he reminded that Olencio was also the Joint Secretary of GRE, Rodrigues after taking a pause said his organisation (committee) had taken a decision not to support any individual or party for the elections.
Rodrigues however maintained that he supports Sancoale ZP member Mariano Rodrigues in his individual capacity and not as GRE member. Rodrigues is the front runner for the Congress party ticket. However, Congress is yet to officially announce its candidate.
Decries 7-day fishing ban on account of BRICS
CORTALIM: Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott President Agnelo Rodrigues has criticised the government’s blanket ban on fishing from October 10 to 17 due to the BRICS Summit.
In a press release, Rodrigues said, “Only 5-star resorts will earn in abundance out of this Summit and we the traditional fishermen who survive on the daily fish catch will have to starve for seven days.”
GRE Joint General Secretary Olencio Simoes too attacked the State government. “This government seems to be the government of the rich and influential only, while the poor are trampled. We are not against the BRICS Summit, but let not this be an occasion for the government to exploit the hardworking people of Goa.”
GRE further warned the State government that they must compensate all those affected fishermen due
to this Summit or else the GRE will be forced to defy
the ban.
