"We fishermen are against any development in Vasco Bay. Even the talk of a fishing jetty is only a facade to make way for the coal handling berth," Simoes said and recalled that the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) in its report had given its finding against augmentation of coal handling by MPT.
Olencio expressed apprehension that if the development of Vasco Bay was to be allowed, then whatever is remaining of the Vasco beach would become extinct and also the sand dunes would be destroyed.
"In MPT's development plan, it has two bays - Vasco bay and Baina bay. Since the development of Baina bay is not feasible for want of railway line, Vasco bay is being targetted for development, which would be environmentally disastrous," said Simoes.
GRE to up ante against new berth in Vasco Bay
Hitting out at MPT Chairman I Jayekumar over his statements to develop a new berth at Vasco Bay, Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) General Secretary Olencio Simoes said the GRE would oppose any berth in the Vasco Bay.
