Will the garden and green waste shredder provide an answer to the mounds of coconut waste, including husks awaiting disposal at the commercial capital?
Trial runs of the shredder at Sonsodo are presently underway at the Sonsodo waste management site since the last few days with workers hoping against hope that the machine will also take care of the coconut waste generated in the city.
Mounds of coconut waste including husk and shells is a common site in the commercial capital for want of disposal facility. A significant quantity of the coconut waste was earlier going to the crematorium for use in the disposal of the bodies. However, the generation of coconut waste, including tender coconut waste, has been such that it has almost become impossible for the waste handlers to handle the waste.
A worker told The Goan that the garden and green waste shredder roped in by the civic body last week may offer a solution to the problem of disposal of garden waste as well as coconut waste.
“The machine is primarily meant for the disposal of garden and green waste including trees. This was all along being disposed of near the KTC bus stand on the GSUDA land. But, with the illegal dumping coming under the High Court scanner, the civic body stopped waste dumping on the GSUDA land,” the worker said.
He added, “We intend to use the machine not only to handle the green waste, but also shred the coconut husk into powder. This would go a long way in solving the coconut waste problem plaguing the commercial capital”.
