In an attempt to bring to life the degenerating coconut trees along the Guirim NH 66 highway, the Goa Green Brigade has decided to initiate a rejuvenation programme on Sunday to save the iconic palm trees along the route.
“Our effort is to rejuvenate the highly damaged coconut trees at Guirim highway through a community programme and undertake “new rooting” of the coconut trees with the help of agriculture experts and use of organic special all-in-one manure mix,” said Avertino Miranda, coordinator of Goa Green Brigade.
He said the coconut trees were on the verge of dying due to the indiscriminate choking of their stem with the dumping of debris to a height of one to five metres above the ground level.
“The Goa Green Brigade along with horticulturist Miguel Braganza and Nestor Rangel of Ilha Verde and tree lovers have decided to rejuvenate these heritage coconut trees by “new rooting” with the use of organic manure,” he said.
“We need 15 volunteers to dig the soil around the coconut trees and fill-in the manure to help the coconut trees get fresh roots,” he added and appealed to volunteers to join them in the endeavour at 9.30 am on September 13 at the Guirim flyover.
The Goa Green Brigade has also written to Principal Chief Engineer PWD, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and the manager of MVR Infra Projects about the community effort to save the damaged coconut trees.
“We plan to initiate the process to rejuvenate the coconut trees at Guirim highway flyover. We request you to provide necessary support and cooperation for the same,” Miranda said in a letter to the senior officials.
