The Goa Green Brigade (GGB) along with a number of environment groups and students joined hands to protest against global warming and widespread environment degradation along the highway opposite the petrol pump at Guirim on Friday.
Speaking to reporters at the site, GGB Coordinator Avertino Miranda said the GGB has joined the global movement of over 150 countries to jointly conduct a global climate strike every Friday. “Goa too has become part of this movement with various environment organisations and citizens concerned over the rapidly deteriorating environment situation.”
“Over 30 coconut trees along the Guirim highway have been cut in a clandestine manner in the middle of night and its palms, stems and roots made to disappear to destroy evidence.” “The road contractor should not only replant coconut trees but should also be made to ensure that they tend the trees for the next 10 years. We have written to the chief secretary and principal chief conservator of forests in this regard,” said Miranda.
Claiming that fields on the either of Guirim are being filled with mud for construction purposes, Miranda said several small business establishments have illegally come in the fields and the panchayat had not taken any action in this regard.
“The GGB is concerned about destruction of hills, fertile agriculture lands, sand dunes, springs, rivers, etc, which pose a serious threat to biodiversity.”
“If we destroy the environment, humanity will be in danger as the environment will, in tern, will destroy human beings. Hence, it is necessary to protect ecology at all costs,” said Miranda.
