A group of women, claiming to be tenants, demanding a stop to the ongoing works on the Dr Francis Luis Gomes memorial at Navelim initiated by the Dr Francis Luis Gomes memorial trust headed by ex-Rajya Sabha MP Luizinho Faleiro.
Faleiro, however, clarified there is no stay on the project, saying the district Court has only stayed an order of the trial court passed in 2022, adding that the stay has no bearing on the ongoing construction of the memorial.
A woman Shantu Rodrigues, who claimed to be the tenant of the land in question, said the district court has stayed the Judgment, order and decree dated November 1, 2022 passed by a trial court. Armed with the stay order, Shantu demanded that the PWD stay the work on the construction of the Dr Francis Luis Gomes memorial, saying she and others are the tenants of the land in question.
Faleiro later told the media that there is no stay on the ongoing work on the memorial, asserting that the land in question belongs exclusively to the Dr Francis Luis Gomes Memorial Trust.
“The Trust came in possession of the land through a court decree signed by the family members of Dr Gomes. I am only a custodian of the land, which is exclusively used for development of the history, ethos, heritage of Dr Gomes”, Faleiro said.
He added: “As Chairman of the Trust, I have been protecting the land of Dr Gomes in the Court of Mamladar, Collector, Junior and Senior division Courts and the High Court. Since work on the memorial has now started under the MPLAD scheme, the land now belongs to the Collector. These cases will come and go. Construction work on the memorial project will continue. We will fight in the court as we had fought for the last 30 years.”
