The Goan Seamen Association of India has decided to take up the issue of appointing Masters/Chief Engineers, or individuals with a similar background as seafarers, in government departments that facilitate shipping operations such as the Directorate General of Shipping, Mercantile Marine Department, Seafarers Employment Office, Shipping Office, Captain of ports, etc
In light of the upcoming Seafarers Day on June 25, GSAI has planned to bring out a commemorative souvenir and to felicitate our Goan seafarers who are presently working as Chefs/Chief cooks. A Constituency-wise Awareness and Interaction Programme for seafarers will be conducted. These programmes aim to provide important information, create awareness about various schemes and benefits available to seafarers, and address their concerns.
At the annual general body meeting, GSAI president Frank Viegas pointed out that individuals with practical experience in the shipping industry can bring valuable expertise to these departments as they possess extensive knowledge and expertise in the field of shipping and maritime operations.
“Appointing them in government departments ensures that decision-making and policies are guided by their practical experience and understanding of the industry. Their appointment can bring a deeper understanding of the issues faced by seafarers, thereby enabling the implementation of policies and measures that can effectively reduce their workload and improve their working conditions”, he said.
Frank further pointed out that having an individual with a seafaring background in government departments ensures that the voices of seafarers are represented and heard in decision-making processes.
“They can advocate for seafarers' rights, working conditions, and overall well-being, helping to shape policies that always keep seafarers' interests in mind. Appointing Masters/Chief Engineers in government departments fosters better communication and collaboration between the government, industry, and seafarers. Their presence can facilitate dialogue, create effective partnerships, and lead to the implementation of practical solutions that serve the best interests of seafarers”, he said.
The members also resolved to send a letter of appreciation to the Indian Navy Marine commandos for swift action during the piracy attack in the Somalia region on the ship Lila Norfolk where the crew was safely rescued.
