The member secretary of Goa State Biodiversiy Board Pradip Sarmokadam stated that there is a good demand for freshwater fish like common carp, rohu and katla in the State of Goa . The Savlem lake in Pilerne Village has been identified for stocking of fish seeds and efforts are being made to support growth of local fish diversity and enhance the productivity of wetland ecosystems.
He was speaking at Savlim lake after releasing around 2000 fish seeds (Common carp-1000 nos), Catla (500 nos) and Rohu (500 nos) in Savlem lake. The Sarpanch of Pillerne “Marra Amarnath Govekar and the panch members Sandeep Bandodkar, Karan Govekar, Brenda Vaz, Chairperson of Biodiversity Management Committee of Pilerne Marra panchayat Sayajirao Rane were present on this occasion.
Sarmokadam further mentioned that GSBB has constituted Thematic Expert Committee (TEC) on Marine and Wetland Biodiversity. The members of the Committee on Marine and Wetlands Biodiversity felt that Savlem Lake is an extremely good habitat to create a success story in restoring the ecology of the lake. Directorate of Fisheries also expressed interest in stocking fish (local) varieties in Savlem lake and it was resolved during 2nd meeting of TEC on Marine and Wetland Biodiversity that local fish varietiesshould be stockedin Savlem Lake said Sarmokadam.
Dr Baban Ingole former Scientist, NIO and member of Thematic Expert Committee (TEC) on Marine and Wetland Biodiversity stated that fresh water aquaculture activities offers a good potential to increase fresh water fish production as well as to generate self-employment in rural area.
The Sarpanch of Pillerne Marra Panchaya Amarnath Govekar expressed his gratitude towards this initiative taken up by GSBB for the conservation of wetlands in Pilerne Marra Village Panchayat.
Karan Govekar welcomed the gathering and Sandeep Bandodkar proposed vote of thanks.
