A flagship project of the State Government, nearly 35 per cent of the work on the bridge has already been completed. Once completed, the Bridge will be the third longest cable-stayed bridge in the Country.
Presently, the work on shifting the launching girder from the yard to the bridge site has started. Once the girder is set up by July-end or August, the segments will be shifted one by one to the site.
Speaking to media persons at the Larsen & Toubro casting yard at Dhargal, Panaji MLA and GSIDC Vice-Chairman Sidharth Kuncalienkar said, “As regard the work on the bridge on the northern side is concerned, piling work on all the pillars has been completed. The progress is nearly 90 per cent on the northern side. The piling work on the four pillars in the river has been completed. aLSO, work on one pillar is almost complete.”
As regards the southern side of the bridge is concerned, the NGT had stayed the work for almost a year.
“Presently, 70 per cent of the pile foundation is completed. We are trying to clear last year’s backlog within 5 months. By May 2017, we target completing the work. Here the forms are made, concrete is filled and there are holes from where the cables will be passed for strengthening of the bridge”, he informed.
While every segment takes nearly 3-4 days for completion, presently the cast for two spans is ready for erection. “Once it reaches the site, the crane will left it from the trailers and install it on the launching girder”, said Kuncalienkar.
GSIDC Managing Director Sanjit Rodrigues stated, “In addition to the technical aspect, we are also looking into the aesthetics of the structure. This beautifully designed cable stayed bridge will add to the aesthetics of the city. A considerable amount of time was spent deliberating on the design of the bridge. The pillars are slender as the roads are narrow and to maintain its aesthetic value, yet it is strong enough to support the structure. There will also be a crash barrier or median below the bridge for safety reasons. However we will beautify this median and make it appealing visually.”
